Develop the skills to plan and read more Dr. Mrs Derkyi

The Head of the Department of Forest Science in the University of Energy and Natural Resources(UENR), Dr. Mrs. Mercy Adutwumwaa Derkyi has urged graduate students to develop the habit to plan and read more articles in their area of studies to enable them broaden their horizon. She said planning and reading cannot be underrated in research since it helps organize and give additional information to what was being learnt at the graduate level.

Dr. Mrs. Derkyi was speaking at the launch of the maiden edition of Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) Skills and Methods week celebration held at UENR under the theme: “The Role of Graduate Entrepreneurship in Achieving a Ghana Beyond Aid”. The week celebration sought to organize and equip graduate students for a successful career in the academia and to find solutions to issues of national interest.

Dr. Mrs. Derkyi who was also the chairperson for the occasion hammered on the need to add value to scientific skills and knowledge acquired at the foundation level so as to become masters of those skills. She further indicated that in order to be a master or philosopher in a specific area, a lot of skills were needed in addition to knowledge gained at undergraduate level. She said that as a graduate student, planning should be the first skill for becoming a successful researcher, adding that students should have a purposeful roadmap and demonstrate an attitude of note taking to enable them grasp important information that would help them in their academic development.

Touching on interpersonal relationship as a skill required by graduate students, Dr. Mrs. Derkyi advised students to cultivate the habit of listening more, good human relation, negotiation as well as “positive visibility” attitude. She indicated that students should learn to listen, be humble and have good relationship with their supervisors to prevent delay of completion of their respective programmes of study. She mentioned that it was irrelevant for researchers not to make use of results to impact society positively and urged students to acquire organizational skills for a better attitude towards work.  Dr. Mrs. Derkyi encouraged GRASAG-UENR to organize more seminars to build the skills of students in project proposal writing which she said could earn grants and enable them subsidize their finances.

The Local President of GRASAG-UENR, Mr. Dickson Kyere-Duah in his welcome address said the theme for the week celebration was in line with the national agenda of Ghana beyond aid which was geared towards the nation seeking its own developmental initiative instead of relying on foreign aids. He appealed to the management of the University to make funds available on time for students to undertake research activities and contribute towards national development.

The National President of GRASAG Miss Iris Kwafo Mensah in an address said graduate entrepreneurship cannot be over emphasized since it was much needed in the contemporary world. She announced that plans were underway to arrive at a standard policy document to institutionalized the celebration of GRASAG entrepreneurship skills and method week. Present at the occasion were the Registrar of the University, Mr. Solomon Panford, Esq, APR, the Global President of the Alumni Association-UENR, Mr. Lewis Amankona and representatives from University of Professional Studies.
